At Watersports Port Vila, we're passionate about sharing the beauty of Vanuatu's underwater world. But we also recognize the responsibility we have to protect it. That's why we're launching an expanded initiative: coral gardening and seagrass planting not only at Paradise Cove, but throughout Port Vila Harbour! Plus, we're removing deadly "ghost gear" from our waters.

What is Ghost Gear? Lost or abandoned fishing gear – nets, lines, and traps – continues to trap and kill marine life long after it's been discarded. It's a silent killer that damages our reefs and endangers our wildlife.

Why Coral & Seagrass?

Coral reefs and seagrass beds are vital to the health of our oceans AND crucial for the survival of incredible marine animals. They provide:

  • Habitat: A home for countless marine species, from colorful fish to sea turtles.
  • Coastal Protection: Natural barriers against erosion and storm surges, protecting our communities and businesses.
  • Water Filtration: Keeping our waters clean and clear, improving visibility and tourism.
  • Carbon Sequestration: Helping to combat climate change.
  • A Feast for Iconic Species: Vanuatu is the easternmost habitat for the elusive dugong! Seagrass beds are their primary food source, and crucial for their survival. Green and Hawksbill turtles also rely on seagrass as a vital part of their diet.

A Thriving Underwater Ecosystem for ALL, from Paradise Cove to the Heart of Port Vila! Free from the Threat of Ghost Gear!

With your support, we can establish coral nurseries and seagrass beds, carefully placing them in pre-selected areas throughout Port Vila Harbour and at Paradise Cove to maximize their impact. We will also conduct regular clean-up dives to remove ghost gear, ensuring our reefs are safe for all marine life. Your donation will directly fund:

  • Employment: Providing jobs for local Ni-Vanuatu guides and community members.
  • Equipment: Essential tools and materials for coral propagation, seagrass planting, and ghost gear removal.
  • Education: Raising awareness about the importance of marine conservation and the animals that depend on it.
  • Expanded Restoration: Reaching more reefs and seagrass beds in need of help, right here in Port Vila.
  • Ghost Gear Removal: Funding clean-up dives and proper disposal of discarded fishing gear.

  • $10: Plant 5 Sea Grass Plugs, contributing to a vibrant new sea grass meadow.
  • $20: Plant one Coral Fragment, contributing to a vibrant new reef.
  • $25: Combo - Sea Grass Plug and a Coral Fragment
  • $50: Support a local Ni-Vanuatu worker for a half-day, helping with coral or seagrass planting or ghost gear removal. 
  • $75: Employ a local Ni-Vanuatu worker for a full day, helping with coral or seagrass planting or ghost gear removal.
  • $50: Provide essential equipment for monitoring the health of our restored ecosystems and tracking the return of dugongs and turtles!
  • $500: Sponsor a whole coral table, helping us expand our nurseries.
  • $1000: Sponsor a ghost gear clean-up dive in Port Vila Harbour.
